Salt is added to food to make it tastier. Salt provides your body with sodium, which is necessary for proper muscle function and regulating the amount of water in the body. The average daily sodium intake for most Americans should be 1500 milligrams, while the maximum intake is 2300 milligrams. Consuming more sodium than the maximum daily recommended intake is harmful.

The overuse of salt can cause chemical imbalances that can lead to death. Here is a list of reasons why too much salt is bad for your health:

  4. Kidneys – Your kidneys help to remove waste products, balance fluid levels and control the production of red blood cells in your body. But with high salt intake and high blood pressure combined, this can be lethal to your kidneys.
